Last week I was privileged to walk through a beautiful old growth forest. I noticed scorch marks on the bark of many of the huge old trees, evidence of their survival of a blaze that flashed through the forest 75 years ago. Young trees were growing at their base, as forest life has continued year after year.
I stood quietly for a while, studying the trees. I imagined the older trees as the forest story tellers, recounting their battles with ferocious winds and ravenous flames.
Maybe the older trees share their stories with the younger ones, ‘When I was your age…’
Maybe they also offer sage advice. ‘When a strong wind comes, lean into it. Don’t try to fight the wind. Just remember to bend and let it flow through you. You'll be fine.’
Good advice, I must say...
