This charming chipmunk darted onto the path in pursuit of a morsel of food. I froze, not wanting to scare him away. As he munched on a stem, I knew he was poised to flee at any hint of danger.
He glanced at me, and apparently decided that his need for food outweighed any threat I might pose. Moments later he disappeared into the brush.
As I continued wandering, I thought about the little chipmunk. Animals continually take risks...exposing themselves to physical danger as they seek food and shelter. Their very survival depends upon their willingness to take chances.
We humans also ongoingly take risks as we face our challenges and life lessons. Psychologist Abraham Maslow once said, ‘We have two options. To step forward into growth or to step back into safety.’
Living on this amazing planet requires so much courage.
And I applaud us for our bravery…
