Last week I spotted a green heron standing at the edge of a stream. He was partially hidden in the shadows, so a clear photograph was unlikely. I stood for a while, wishing and hoping he would move into the light. He didn’t.
I finally gave up and turned away. As I turned, I noticed this beautiful cedar waxwing on a branch above me. What a lovely surprise.
It was later in my wandering that I had a thought. Have I been missing some of life’s surprises? Maybe I’ve been too focused on wishing and hoping and trying to make things happen.
As I pondered, I realized that my most memorable experiences were the unexpected ones, more wonderful than anything I could have wished or hoped for.
So…maybe it’s time to loosen my grip on life and let the universe surprise me.
