My heart always beats a little faster when I encounter animals. I was charmed by these two little birds…kestrels sitting together on a fence post, just being themselves.
An ancient philosopher once mused, ‘Being yourself is a key to happiness.’
Animals can’t help but be themselves. I’ve never seen a robin pretending to be an eagle, or observed a goldfish assuming the characteristics of a dolphin. Pretending isn’t in their nature.
As I stood quietly watching the birds, I thought about times when I’ve pretended, abandoned my own nature in order to fit in or to please someone. Older and a bit wiser now, I realize that being myself is more than enough.
A key to happiness…I appreciated the reminder.
