I heard him before I saw him…this lovely woodpecker. A steady tapping on tree bark in his search for insects. And I spotted him a few more times as I wandered around a pond one morning.
And I had a thought. I’ve heard it said that animals are divinely designed to provide companionship for humans.
True of household pets, yes, but perhaps also true of animals residing in the natural world. Not to become domesticated, but maybe to provide us with those brief but important connections between species.
It seems that the lovely woodpecker and I kept each other company that morning. And I appreciated that.
I suspect we’re all members of one big family sharing this beautiful planet.
What a wonderful gift…
